Hawaii: Work on Giant Telescope Is Paused

Gov. David Ige of Hawaii said Tuesday that construction on the Thirty Meter Telescope at Mauna Kea was stopping for a week. He said the group building the telescope, one of the world’s largest, had agreed to pause construction to allow interested parties to have more discussions about the project. The peak of Mauna Kea is held sacred by some Native Hawaiians, and hundreds of people have recently protested the construction. More than a dozen people were arrested last week for blocking the road that leads to the top of Mauna Kea.
